Le charm discret de la bourgeoisie

Posted by Ursula on Wednesday, 11 June 2008

How good is your blog? A question, just now, not thrown at me personally but an all round one.

Let’s not delude ourselves: The answer, in most cases, is a word starting with s and ending with e. And before there is a bust up in my inbox, yes, I do include myself. In fact, every time I hit the “publish” button I am immediately disenchanted with myself. So, evidently, the only way is to go down – until you hit rock bottom.

One of my friends, the one who gives me more heartache than the rest of you combined, refers to many a comment on his blog, disparagingly, as so much dinner party conversation. I have no idea what he means, and he has not yet expanded on his view.

In my experience food and conversation go well together: Sharing the bread, eating makes you mellow and relaxed, throw in a few glasses of wine (in vino veritas), the tongue will loosen and – if a man – your belt, and life is worth living.

Addendum: Please note that the French – using gender to their nouns - have made “charm” male.

The cat is out of the bag

Posted by Ursula on Wednesday, 11 June 2008

My sister Petra has just screwed my head back on.

Not only has she found the missing link but the piece in a puzzle I have been trying to complete for some time.

By way of her profession, and life’s experience, she is supremely qualified to do any of the above; she did it gently, but firmly. Am I happier for it? Not really; who wants the truth? But I am grateful to her for taking the time to ask all the right questions and listen to me – considering that even my closest friends tell me that I am secretive and a closed book. It was a relief.

Where to go from here? I don’t know.
