Nostalgia

Last night Felix and I shared “Birds Eye ‘Limited Edition’ 10 Fish Fingers with a hint of lemon”.
The limited edition bit on the packaging adding to the hilarity of the occasion. How limited can fish fingers ever be – in a world flooded with fish fingers? Still, with my faith in the good of the world, I’ll keep the box - just in case. Ten or a hundred years down the line it’ll make me a fortune on ebay.
Just in case you are still wondering what we were eating: The small print on the back points out “Contains fish” – I love it.
We hadn’t had fish fingers in ten years or so; and I don’t know what came over me when trailing the shopping aisles. Still, routines need to be broken every so often and risks to be taken: Felix is used to fresh fish cooked lovingly. After his initial misgivings as to supper’s offering, he was touched, remembering and savouring one of his favourite nursery foods.
When he was little, the two of us travelling Europe, we’d leave a trail of opened packages of fish fingers in friends’ freezers. One of them called me, about six months later, asking me what to do with the rest. His dog survived to tell the fish tail.
