Middle of the night

Posted by Ursula on Friday, 24 October 2008

If there is one thing to be said for matrimony it’s that it keeps one pinned to the mattress in the middle of the night. It’s a matter of principle.

Dear God in heaven, one of these days my overloaded and sleep deprived mind will explode and leave my senses. VOASF, of course, would love nothing better than to send me buckets full of sleeping pills – sod the cost – to keep me quiet at three in the morning; in fact any time of the day. In fairness I did warn him that they’ll have opposite effect and will keep me even more awake. Doctors, pills and my poor demented self do not mix. I sincerely hope I won’t have to inflict myself on some 29 year old fresh out of medical school when I hit the brink. Not only will the experience sap all his professional confidence, for all I know I’ll end up nursing him.

Being holed up here, at four in the morning with my main contingent happily asleep all over Europe, I think of dear sweet friends overseas - still awake – and I hope alive – all watching useless TV programmes or contemplating life, writing prose and poems whilst I am slowly going off the rail. If you ever find time to visit me in the asylum: I do like white grapes (chilled), apples and all other fruit (bananas underripe), and sunflowers.

Roger over, most definitely not ‘out’,

Dearest Hearts, I am in despair. My most visited post is still the one containing “Lederhosen” closely followed by “Brothers in Arms”. What’s wrong with everyone? Top search (don’t ask): Fish fingers.

Having contributed the above to humanity’s sorry history I’ve done my bit and feel, like Rilke, that a spot of retiring to TB or pneumonia is in order. I pity the person who feels compelled to give speech at my grave (Yes, Martin, you!). I can hear it now. How did a friend of mine email me a few days ago: ”… you write so well that the unfortunate reality of your situation sounds more like something to laugh about than to worry …” As obituaries go I hope that’ll be said when the time comes.

Let’s laugh whilst we can. Crying can wait, and does - most patiently.
